Ernest
R. Crutcher, III (cancelled)
Owner
of Microlab Northwest
[PDC02] Feb. 16, 2008
Mr. Crutcher is
the owner and Principle Scientist for Microlab Northwest, an environmental
and materials sciences consulting laboratory. Mr. Crutcher has a bachelor's
degree in Physical Anthropology with Minors in Mathematics, Physics,
and Chemistry. He worked as a Police Department Crime Scene Investigator
for three years prior to joining the Boeing Company. He was the Principle
Scientist for the Boeing Company Particle Identification and Image Analysis
Laboratory, part of the Analytical Engineering Group, from 1974 to 2001.
He was an Associate Instructor at the University of Washington, School
of Engineering, Materials Sciences Engineering from 1980 to 1989 where
he taught the Optical Characterization of Materials. He was a Visiting
Scholar to Imperial College, London, UK for part of the summers of 1985
and 1987, where he gave instruction in the characterization of household
and urban dusts. From 1989 to 1993 he was the Principle Investigator
for Contamination Analysis on a major NASA satellite program (the Long
Duration Exposure Facility, LDEF satellite).
Mr. Crutcher has been analyzing particles and interpreting their significance
in the environment for nearly forty years. His analysis of the significance
of trace evidence at crime scenes helped to determine the guilt or innocence
of many accused persons. While he was with the Boeing Company, hundred
million dollar decisions were made based on his analysis of the significance
of contaminants in systems destined for orbital or interplanetary missions.
Mr. Crutcher was a Principle Investigator for the Environmental Protection
Agency beginning in 1974 on contract through the Boeing Company until
1978. From 1978 on he has supported EPA, GSA, DOD, NASA, and HUD contracts
through Microlab Northwest. Other Clients of Microlab Northwest include
numerous Industrial Hygiene consultants, and companies such as Lockheed-Martin,
Grumman, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Boeing, and many others.
Mr. Crutcher's primary field of interest is in the extraction of data
from particles. A fundamental part of this analysis is an understanding
of the physics of particle migration in an environment. In order to
extract this information the particle itself must be identified and
characterized with reference to its source. Mr. Crutcher not only has
a background in the theory of particle identification and behavior but
also over 35 years of practical experience. He is a recognized expert
witness in Civil and Criminal courts from the Municipal to the Federal
level. He has written over seventy papers on particle analysis and materials
characterization.
